The biggest upgrade with the Phantom 4 Pro is the new 20MP, 1", 4K camera sensor. In theory, this should produce a lot better images with more mega pixels, higher dynamic range and perform better in low light. Here are the results from our initial test flight. Eager to try the new camera, we flew our Phantom 4 Pro alongside our original Phantom 4 on an admittedly grey Decembers day. We attempted to frame each comparison shot as careful as possible and took them in a similar time-period to ensure light levels were similar.
MegaPixel Test
First up, lets compare pixels. Here’s a side by side comparison of the quality given from the Phantom 4 Pro (20MP) vs the original Phantom 4 (12MP).
ISO Range Test
Below is the full range of ISO settings available from ISO 100 through to 12,800. To enlarge the image, to get more detail on the grain, simply click on the photo.
Aperture Test
The Phantom 4 Pro has a mechanical aperture ring ranging from f/2.8 to f/11. When pushing lenses to there most extreme aperture size, you can sometimes find vignetting or softness in your image however from our test it seemed to hold up pretty well. See the images below.
Conclusion
I'm not a pro photographer per se, but my initial impression is that it's a good improvement on the standard Phantom 4. The larger sensor's increased pixel count clearly brings in greater detail. Once I have the chance to take further pictures I will add some above with different lightning conditions. It is hard to be impressed by these shots as it wasn't ideal lighting conditions or an interesting subject. As such I'm keen to go out for some more tests as I feel these results have perhaps not done it justice. The
Phantom 4 Pro is available to purchase on our store.
